Piece of Pilbara to travel with Kookaburras

CHRIS LEESPilbara News

Members of one of Australia’s greatest sports teams visited Roebourne recently to teach children hockey skills.

The Kookaburras visited the school on Friday and helped with a busy bee the next day.

There was a special moment between respected Aboriginal man Middleton “Boonjah” Cheedy and National Indigenous Program ambassador and Kookaburra player Des Abbott during the visit.

Boonjah presented Abbott with a hockey stick hand-carved from a tree of his traditional country. “We’ve never gotten anything like this before … it really is unique and fantastic,” Abbott said.

The stick will now travel with the national team to tournaments throughout the world, where it will hang in the dugout during games.
