Pilbara health benefits from State Budget

More than $250 million has been set aside in the State Budget to improving health facilities across the Pilbara.

The Newman Health Service Redevelopment Project will receive $49.7 million, $183.9 million will go towards the Karratha Health Campus, $13.6 million for the Pilbara Health Partnership and $18.9 million for the Onslow Hospital.

Renal Dialysis services, the North West Health Initiative and the Ear Health program will also be expanded.

Shire of East Pilbara chief executive Alan Cooper said a refurbished hospital would be beneficial for Newman and surrounding areas.

“It is a fantastic benefit to the community which has been discussed for a number of years,” he said.

“It has always been recognised in our community surveys that people would like a refurbished hospital.”

The State Government commitment will bring total funding for the hospital to nearly $60m, with BHP Billiton chipping in $10m.

Pilbara Development Commission acting chief executive Terry Hill said it was pleasing to see a significant four-year commitment to improving community services and economic outcomes for regional WA.

He said the $49.75 million for the Newman health services facility was a major win for the inland Pilbara town.

“High quality health services are critical to the well-being and retention of communities,” he said.

“Having just visited Newman with our board last week, I know how much the project will mean to the community, which is a three-hour drive from the nearest major town.”

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the Royalties for Regions investment would build infrastructure to grow the Pilbara, develop economic opportunities and improve targeted social programs.

“The Government has made responsible decisions to ensure Pilbara communities continue to thrive, develop and contribute to the State’s economy,” he said.

“We must look to secure our State’s future and provide opportunities for industry growth that supports local jobs and creates long-term benefits for regional communities.”

In addition, the Pilbara region also has the opportunity to access funding from the $642 million allocated over the next four years to implement major economic, social and community development projects that arise from Regional Investment Blueprints.
