Foreshore development works for the small coastal town of Point Samson are about to begin after years of planning.

The first stage of the City of Karratha’s Point Samson Foreshore Works Implementation Plan will involve the installation of a decked area and shade structure on the beach near Miller Close.

It is scheduled to be finished by June.

It will be followed by work to rehabilitate sand dunes and improve fencing around the foreshore.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said developing the Point Samson foreshore was a key first step in developing the town.

“Protecting our coastal assets is a huge priority for Council and we have been working with the community to develop a vision for Point Samson that will protect our coastline while enhancing amenity for the community, ” he said.

“It’s fantastic to see all the hard work done in developing these plans come to fruition.”

The foreshore works come at the same time as the City of Karratha finalises its broader vision for the town. The council recently finished drafting the Point Samson Structure Plan, designed to revitalise the town as a coastal attraction, to incorporate feedback from the town community over formalising parking areas and removing tamarisk trees along the beach.

Both points have been contentious since the idea for the plan was first raised two years ago.
