Pony clubbers Have a Go in support of breast cancer fundraising

The first show of the year for a Karratha horse-riding club aimed to introduce Pilbara riders to the world of horse shows while also fundraising for breast cancer research.

The Karratha and King Bay Horse and Pony Club’s first competition, held at Tambrey Oval on Saturday, May 14, invited local riders to “have a go” at a hacking show in a low-pressure environment where all newcomers could be on an equal footing.

About 20 riders aged four to about 35 competed, including some who had never participated in a show before, in two separate rings before judges Sandi Conway and Tracey Gierke.

It was followed by an “evening under the stars” dinner for all competitors, catered by Onyx Cafe.

Karratha and King Bay Horse and Pony Club treasurer Cindy Roberts Newhouse said the day was a good way to encourage interested riders to get involved in the club for the rest of the year.

“It’s a fun day,” she said. “We had lots of new people this year. It’s a good way for them to get experience in the show world without having the pressure of it being official. It’s just no pressure, it’s OK (to try).”

The Pink Have a Go Day is an annual event for the club that marks the beginning of a new horse-riding season and also fundraises for the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Riders and horses alike dressed up in pink in support of the cause, sponsors discounted prizes and ribbons, and the competition nomination fees went towards the BCNA.

Ms Roberts Newhouse said participants had made the most of the event and had a “fantastic” time.

The club also held lessons and a rally at the Tambrey Oval last Sunday morning.
