The City of Karratha is putting its trust in democracy and the maturity of its residents by opening up the naming of the new Karratha Arts and Community Precinct to public suggestions.

A naming competition will be developed by the City and put out to the public, with five options to be short-listed for further consideration after the process.

City of Karratha Deputy Mayor John Lally said it was important the community led the process to name what would become a key gathering place.

“We want to give it a name that evokes the wonderful sense of place that we have created over the past few years on Sharpe Avenue and that will be complete with this wonderful entrance statement,” he said.

“The theatre, cinema, outdoor amphitheatre and state-of-the-art library that will be housed in the facility will make it a bustling centre of activity for the community and we want a name that will be instantly recognisable and befitting of a facility that will be much loved.”

Early this year a call to name a research vessel in the UK backfired spectacularly when the public overwhelmingly voted for RSS Boaty McBoatface.

The government chose not to stick with the populist choice, leading to claims they were subverting democracy.

ThePilbara News understands it is inevitable someone will suggest a name in honour of Red Dog.
