A piece of Pilbara history has been uncovered in Karratha in the form of a commemorative Red Dog Emu Export can.

The special edition cans were produced by the Swan Brewery in the mid-90s to celebrate the “hobo Red Dog” as the blurb on the can puts it.

Alan Duncan was handed the can six years ago after the man who enjoyed the beverage passed away.

“This can was put out by the Swan Brewery in 1994 for the 40th anniversary of Emu Export,” he said.

“This particular can was enjoyed by John Smith and his widow gave it to me.

“John knew Red Dog, he was a train driver with Hamersley Iron so he actually encountered Red Dog a few times.”

Mr Duncan said he would like to eventually hand over the can to an institution which could preserve and display the historic red can.

Alternatively, Mr Duncan said it would be great to see someone build a large version of it to put beside the big bush chook at Anchovy Flats.
