Road petition tabled in parliament

CHRIS LEESPilbara News

A petition calling for the completion of the direct, sealed road between Tom Price and Karratha has been tabled in State Parliament this week.

Last month, the Pilbara News reported about 900 residents of the remote inland town had signed the petition, organised by townswoman Cecilia Fernandez, which called on the Government to allocate money in the 2012-13 budget to finish stages three and four of the road.

Ms Fernandez passed on the signatures to Pilbara MLA Tom Stephens, who has pushed for the road to be sealed in the past.

Mr Stephens said he congratulated Ms Fernandez and her team for the time and effort they put in to organising the petition.

“You can’t help but be very impressed by the number of people willing to fight for this road,” he said.

“It’s clearly a very important issue to the people of these major wealth-producing inland Pilbara communities and causes great concern for the safety and travel time of those that travel this road.

“This road is an important link to Karratha and the coast and a necessary part of attracting people to the inland communities, knowing that they have safe and comfortable road links to shops and services.”
