The second stage of the Youth Shed Outdoor Redevelopment project was completed last month, after receiving a $20,000 state government grant for the area to receive a much needed facelift.

The recreational area now includes a multi-purpose court with basketball backboard, additional shade and seating, further skate elements and a natural-feel amphitheatre.

The official opening event ‘Beats by the Park’ saw a DJ battle take place for youth aged 11 and over.

The winners Fred Kettlewell and Brandon Saena performed at the Beats in the Heat music festival on August 8, which attracted more than 1500 residents from across the region.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the redeveloped outdoor space improved the facilities on offer at The Youth Shed.

“These new outdoor facilities provide children, youth and families with an integrated and maintained open space for active and passive recreation, while the fresh components will allow us to add extra scope to the fantastic community programs provided by The Youth Shed,” he said.

Cr Long thanked funding partner Pilbara Development Commission for their ongoing support throughout the project.

Pilbara Development Commission Acting chief executive Terry Hill said quality youth-focused facilities were key to making the Pilbara a desirable place to live.

“The additional multi-purpose outdoor space caters to a wide variety of interests, further increasing usage of the popular youth facility,” he said.

“The Youth Shed was one of the first major community infrastructure projects funded through the Pilbara Cities Initiative, so it was fitting that the Commission provided support for Stage Two of the project.”
