South Hedland Swans continued on their merry winning way, thumping Karratha Kats by 89 points in their North Pilbara Football League clash last weekend.

The Swans have now locked down second place on the league ladder as they go two games clear of the Kats in third, after producing a consistent four-quarter effort to win 21.13 (139) to 7.8 (50).

Swans coach Troy Melville praised his side's effort in booting five or more goals in each term.

"The challenge was to play four quarters and it is the first time this year we managed to put it together," he said.

"The Kats looked a bit underdone with a couple of boys doubling up (from the reserves game), but we can only worry about our perspective."

The win ensures Swans will take plenty of confidence into the closing stages of the season.

"We knew it was an important game and … it should be pretty hard to knock us out of the double-chance finals position," Melville said.

"As long as we keep doing what we are doing and keep improving week to week we should be able to secure that second spot for the finals."

Having always boasted a talented roster of players, the Swans appear to be playing with greater discipline and structure than in recent years.

They have also lost none of their characteristic flair and speed as they ran rings around their Kats opponents from the outset, leaping out to a 37-point lead by half-time.

With Swans adding five more goals in the third term while restricting the Kats to just one, the Karratha team assembled for the three-quarter-time huddle with the writing on the wall and facing a 62-point deficit.

Kats players urged each other to empty the tank, while in the Swans huddle Melville exhorted his team to produce their first four-quarter performance of the season.

Both teams responded well with the Kats battling bravely, but too often being outmatched by the Swans' skill and fitness as the final result ballooned out to 89 points.

Kristoffer Strahan led the way for the Swans with five majors and Alexander Frawnfezter and Mohammad Razali chipped in with three. Kasziem Bin Sali booted two goals for the Kats.

Melville said the Swans' recent success had had a lot to do with their depth.

"I was really happy with the boys who've come up from the reserves, they've put in a lot of effort and bought into the team plan," he said.

In the reserves, the Swans won 12.12 (84) to 8.5 (53) in a much tighter tussle with the Kats.
