Speeding at harbour raises concern
Pilbara skippers are being urged to slow down in speed-restricted areas including Hampton Harbour.
Department of Transport Pilbara-based regional transport officer Tony Fitzpatrick said there had been a concerning increase in the number of vessels speeding through the mooring area at Hampton Harbour creating a very dangerous situation for all waterway users.
“Skippers need to act responsibly and reduce speed in high-traffic locations such as mooring areas,” he said.
Mr Fitzpatrick said there was also a need to remind skippers the limit for vessels operating as a tender was 3.1m in length, a 5HP engine and they must be marked with parent vessel identification.
“Tenders must only be used for ship to shore transfers or registered in their own right,” he said.
“Tenders also need to carry all the required safety equipment for the unprotected waters of Hampton Harbour, which include; in-date flares, lifejackets, anchor and bailer.
“We urge skippers to grab a copy of the free Karratha-Dampier Boating Guide which contains all the information needed to meet safety requirement and a successful voyage.”
Mr Fitzpatrick said a number of vessels had been recently turned away at local boat ramps because of insufficient or out-of-date safety equipment, particularly out-of-date flares.
Australian Standard flares have a shelf life of three years and an in-date set must be carried when operating in unprotected waters.
