Station gets new host

CAMERON MYLESPilbara News

Karratha has a new voice on its airwaves.

Pablo Newton Farley is the new breakfast announcer at Spirit Radio, arriving in the North West on Sunday; a unique way to celebrate his birthday.

Originally from Melbourne, Newton Farley said he was enthusiastic about starting the role in Karratha.

“I’m trying to acclimatise,” he said.

“I can’t wait to jump in and run the show and meet everyone around town – it’s going to be awesome.”

While in Melbourne, Newton Farley studied at RMIT, turning a three-year degree into a sevenyear degree.

After a stint travelling overseas, he arrived back in Australia and jumped at the opportunity to move to Karratha.

Newton Farley’s inspiration for radio comes from one of the UK’s top comedy talents, Ricky Gervais.

“He used to do a radio show for XFM ages ago in about 1998 and I got hold of some of his old shows and realised how funny you can make radio and the enjoyment you can get out of it,” he said.

“I used to sit on the train and listen to his podcasts and think ‘oh, I think I can do this’.”

Aside from the difference in temperature, Newton Farley said he was surprised by the size of Karratha and projects such as the salt plains out at Dampier.

He said he wanted to make the breakfast show fun and have a lot of interaction with Karratha listeners.

But what will Newton Farley miss the most about Melbourne?

“Probably coffee,” he laughed.
