Student kicks future goals

Courtney FowlerPilbara News

Year 11 St Luke's College student Matthew Lorne was one of 47 boys from around the country to play in the under-18s indigenous all-stars match at the MCG last week.

Matthew has played for the Karratha Kats under-18s side for almost six years and said it was a great honour to be selected after being nominated by the Pilbara regional manager.

"First we went down to Perth for a week with the team and had a camp there that was all about cultural identity because we were from all over Australia," he said.

"Then we went to Melbourne last week and had of a more footy- orientated camp.

"The theme of the camp was resilience… if we don't have resilience, we don't do well to come back and try again - this all led up to the game which we played at the MCG before the Essendon versus Richmond game."

Matthew's team took out the close game 112-107, kicking his team into the lead with a quick goal in the last quarter.

Matthew said the side was the first under-18s indigenous all-stars team to win both games in Perth and Melbourne.

"We really got to know each other and bonded well as a team … I love the game and I'd love to get drafted one day," he said.

"I'll keep working hard towards that."
