Students enjoy friendly competition

Alicia PereraPilbara News

Friendly competition and sportsmanship were on equal display at the Karratha schools Freo Dockers Cup interschool football carnival last Thursday.

Baynton West Primary School hosted this year’s tournament, now in its third year, on their adjoining park oval.

The competition pitted seven boys’ teams and six girls’ teams from Baynton West, Millars Well, Pegs Creek, Tambrey, Karratha, St Paul’s and Wickham primary schools against each other in a lightning carnival format, with winners decided by highest overall points.

Baynton West and Millars Well dominated both competitions.

Both their girls’ teams were undefeated until their final game against each other, in which Baynton West got the edge, making them back-to-back premiers.

Coach Kayla Cross said they had played hard on behalf of departing PE teacher Courtney Jones, who was the original organiser of the carnival.

Millars Well boys turned the tables on their rivals and managed to trump Baynton in their competition, but while Karratha Primary School were also stand-outs.

Mr Jones said the carnival had been building every year and this was the biggest yet.

He said he was glad to see teams helping each other out and so many volunteers contributing on the day.

“There’s been fantastic behaviour; sportsmanship, fair play — it’s all been perfect so far,” he said.

The carnival finished with presentations when the winning teams were announced and each coach chose a team best player.
