Students get first hand history lesson

Twenty students from Tom Price Senior High School returned from a 17-night stay in Europe last month, which included visiting a number of war memorials.

The whirlwind trip included stops in Paris, Berlin, Munich and Belgium.

Year 10 students Asha Holland and Tiffani Olman said it was a great opportunity.

“The Europe camp was an amazing experience where we learned so much about the history and culture of not only the countries that we visited but also Australia,” Asha said.

“It was an experience of a lifetime and one that we will all remember for the rest of our lives,” Tiffani said.

Year 11 students Alix Lincoln, Kelly Stevenson and Chelsea Arvidson were three of the 20 students who travelled to Europe.

“We are sure that everyone got something out of it,” Alex said.

All three thanked the teachers, who gave up their own time for the trip and the sponsors who helped get them there.

Deputy principal Nicole Kelly said everyone had an absolute ball on the trip.

“I think it puts everything into perspective for them, (students) especially seeing all the war memorials in southern France and Belgium,” she said.

Ms Kelly said the group attended a Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate Memorial in

Belgium and spoke for about 45 minutes with a number of war veterans and war widows about their experiences.

“I think going to the POW camp, Dachau was a real eyeopener for them,” she said.

“It (the trip) was so successful, the students were outstanding with their behaviour.

“We are very proud of them.”
