Taverners, Spaniards into grand finals

CHRIS LEESPilbara News

Last weekend the Dampier Taverners and Nickol Spaniards cricket clubs secured wins in their knockout semi finals to advance to the senior men’s cricket grand final this Saturday, 4pm at Windy Ridge Oval in Dampier.

After one of the closest seasons ever seen, there was little separating the top four sides and only 0.01 per cent run rate the only difference between second and third.

At Millars Well, Dampier (6/104) defeated Pegs Creek after chasing down their total of 103 all out.

Clint Degebrodt (31) and Dan Carse (30) were the top scorers with some support from Paul Marion (19).

Pegs crashed from 1/40 to 5/40 after a dominant over from Greg Hall (2/26) but were recovering from 6/50 until Jake Trewin ran out Paul Marrion with the total on 97.

Dampier’s chase started precariously to be 3/15 but Brad Goes (37 not out) and Paul Rowe (38) steadied the ship.

Dan Carse bowled well for his 3/17 off 7.1 overs with support from Kim Wilson (2/20).

At Wickham, the home side posted a competitive total of 140 all out, with Shane Edwards (37) leading the run-scorers.

The game was in the balance with Nickol struggling at 5/83 with Alan Coterill picking up vital wickets.

However captain Michael James (32*) and Dave Drummond (17) stabilised the innings with a 58 run sixth wicket partnership, reaching 5/141 with a few overs to spare.

With Dampier and Nickol having won a game each in their earlier encounters this season, the grand final will no doubt be a close affair.
