Karratha police have arrested a group of juveniles over a car allegedly stolen from Baynton and driven at dangerously high speed along North West Coastal Highway.

Several teenagers, all below driving age, allegedly stole a car from a Baynton property late at night on Friday, April 8 before taking it for a “joy ride”.

Police noticed the vehicle when they attempted to stop it for a random breath test and the driver allegedly refused to stop.

Officers followed the vehicle in their squad car as it headed out of Karratha, south on North West Coastal Highway, where it was allegedly travelling at speeds well over the 110kmh limit.

They had to stop when it became too dangerous to follow the car without endangering other drivers.

Around midnight, the car’s speed allegedly caused it to slide off the road and into a ditch near the 40 Mile Beach access road, around 55km south of Karratha.

Police found the accused juveniles, who were all uninjured, as they were heading back in to Karratha.

They were taken to the station and charged with stealing a motor vehicle, driving recklessly, having no authority to drive, and failing to stop for police.
