For the first time in five years every Year 12 student at Tom Price Senior High School has graduated.

Among the 36-strong class of 2015 to complete school were 13 indigenous students, 10 of whom worked under the Follow the Dream program.

Ninety-six per cent of students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training courses have also met the requirements for their Certificate IIs.

TPSHS principal Trevor Henderson said the excellent achievement was a testament to the hard work of staff and students.

“Given the school’s remote location, I am very of proud of the achievement this year of all the Year 12 students at Tom Price SHS, ” he said.

“I acknowledge that this achievement is also the result of the hardworking and dedicated staff at Tom Price SHS.

“Their dedication and commitment to provide a range of learning opportunities and environments to support all students to be successful has been well rewarded.”

Mr Henderson said the appointment of a WACE co-ordinator and improved course counselling process had been major factors in turning around the school’s fortunes.

Follow the Dream co-ordinator Joe Manning said the program was aimed at helping aspirant indigenous students achieve positive post-school outcomes.

“I have been here for four years and have seen a gradual build-up of relationships with students and families, ” he said.

“They have committed almost two hours a day… attending tuition to work on completing studies.

“These guys will be pursuing a range of post-school qualifications including university, chef apprenticeships, heavy-duty mechanics, army and traineeships.”

Mr Henderson said the success reflected the school’s commitment to achieve the Department of Education’s focus for increased Aboriginal student school attendance, engagement and achievement.
