Triathlon: Hot contest in Dampier

CHRIS LEESPilbara News

Some of Karratha’s finest athletes faced tough conditions on Sunday as Nickol Bay Triathlon’s race season continued.

Despite the early start, hot weather greeted competitors on the testing Dampier course.

The hardest assignment on the morning was the long-course with participants facing a 600m swim leg along the Dampier foreshore, before tackling an 18km bike ride up to Parker Point. The long course finished with a gruelling 6km run to the Peninsula Palms.

Bevan Stirling pushed himself incredibly hard to take the win ahead of last triathlon winner Ben Leishman.

Steve Bertling, who finished second a fortnight ago, rounded out the top three place-getters in third.

The short-course challenge involved a 300m swim, 9km ride and a 3km run.

Wayne Brown followed up his win a fortnight ago by finishing equal first with Tania Neeson.

The next triathlon will be held this Sunday, beginning at the Karratha Aquatics Centre.
