Karratha residents will be treated to an advance screening of the new Red Dog: True Blue movie on Saturday, December 3.

Roebourne will also get a free screening on December 4 at the high school oval.

More details of the Karratha premiere are yet to be confirmed but Dampier Community Association vice-president Sharon Vertigan said the DCA was happy the release of the latest Red Dog movie would again bring awareness of, and indeed people to, the wonderful town of Dampier.

“A major Dampier icon, Red Dog, epitomises the spirit of the Pilbara — welcoming, resilient, friendly, and of course, a great sense of adventure.”

The movie will officially open in cinemas around the country on December 26.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long has also confirmed there will be a museum dedicated to the Pilbara icon.

“The people from the movie are actually going to give us some of the paraphernalia associated with that and we are actually going to make a Red Dog museum some-where around the city,” he said.

“We haven’t decided on the place yet, but it will be a permanent exhibit for the Red Dog series.”

Karratha Veterinary Hospital founder and Red Dog’s vet Rick Fenny said the museum would be a fitting tribute to a Pilbara legend and suggested the museum be in Roebourne or Cossack.

“Seeing (as) he died in Roebourne and is buried at Cossack ... those centres need more recognition,” he said. Ms Vertigan said the museum should be in Dampier, “the home of Red Dog”.

“Tourists and Pilbara locals would be able to take advantage of our perfectly located town with a visit to the beach or view the harbour from the Lookout after visiting the Red Dog museum,” she said.
