Wickham a tidy town finalist for fifth year in a row

Wickham is in the running for yet another award for keeping the streets clean thanks to the efforts of the community and local Tidy Towns group.

The town has been nominated as a State finalist for litter prevention and waste management.

Wickham Tidy Towns president Brett Ball said it was another feather in the cap for the group.

“The community gets behind us all the time,” he said.

“Since 2012 when we started up we’ve managed to be in the State finals every year.

“Our highlight was 2013 when we got a State award for general appearance, but every year it gets tougher and tougher.”

Wickham Tidy Towns has recently had several new additions, including a storage trailer for the barbecue and shade equipment and new license plates to raise funds for the community.

Kelly Nunn hatched the idea to get the license plates believing it would help lift the town’s identity.

“We did a bit of market research on what identifies Wickham and basically we got back the truck, the train and the ship at the entry statement so we thought lets incorporate that into a logo,” she said.

“They’ve gone to lots of ex-Wickham residents and all over the place but are really available to anyone who wants one.

“We have set aside a bit of value on each plate which will get donated to the Wickham Primary P and C and the rest we’ll put into grants funding for community groups.”

Mrs Nunn said anyone wanting a number plate could go to the Wickham Tidy Towns Facebook page.

The next clean up will be held from 8am on June 11, with groups able to raise money through the bags for bucks program by helping out.
