Opportunities for Pilbara women in rugby are set to grow through the inaugural North West Reds Women’s Academy.

Based on their field and school performances in the 2016 season, 14 girls from Hedland and Karratha were chosen by WA Women State Team selectors as having the potential to make the WA side in the future.

Pilbara NRL development officer Mitchell Kurtz said the program would help train up players at an elite level and prepare them for what’s to come.

“Previously, once they finished high school, the girls would have to trav to Perth on their own and with this program we will be able to get them in, train them, then take them to Perth together,” he said.

While the North West Reds have a juniors and men’s academy program, Mr Kurtz said it had been a big push to include a women’s program.

“It’s great to give women a greater chance at following their dreams and we hope to follow through with the program every year,” he said.
