Young Roebourne cast go to rehearsal stage
Rehearsals for Roebourne inspired production Hipbone Sticking Out were held in Canberra last month.
The production, which is part of BighART’s Yijala Yala Project, is based on the story of Roebourne and surrounds.
Hipbone Sticking Out got its name from the Murujuga (Burrup Peninsula) which looks like a hipbone jutting out into the ocean.
The production will combine music, story, movement, video and songs written with inmates at Roebourne Regional Prison.
Four young Roebourne residents and three adults joined Yijala Yala staff on the trip to the other side of the country to see where they will be performing later in the year.
While rehearsing at the Canberra Theatre Centre, the cast worked with a professional choreographer and director.
Two of the younger cast members, Max and Nelson Coppin, said the week of rehearsals was tough.
Nelson said it didn’t matter who you were, you were put to work.
“If you were there they would have made you work,” he said.
“My favourite part of rehearsals was drumming while everyone is dancing.”
Max said although the week was busy, there were highlights apart from all the rehearsing.
“My favourite thing was going to the arcade — it was a fun place with a big three-storey shop,” he said.
Hipbone Sticking Out will play at the Canberra Theatre Centre from July 3-6.
