A severe thunderstorm likely to produce ‘dangerous’ flash flooding is set to hit the Kimberley and North Interior districts over the next few days.

A tropical low across the Northern Territory is expected to shift towards the west coast on Sunday through to early Monday morning, impacting parts of the Kimberley including Halls Creek, Balgo, Lake Argyle and Warmun.

Residents are expected to see heavy rainfall and have been warned of potentially dangerous flash flooding in the river areas.

The Department of Emergency Services has advised residents:

  • If outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.
  • Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning.
  • If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home.
  • Never walk, drive, ride, swim or play in floodwaters as they are dangerous.
  • In areas prone to flash flooding, lift important things like furniture, clothing and valuables on to beds, tables and into your roof space if possible.

The storm is expected to move towards the Pilbara on Tuesday and Wednesday.
