Less than a year after setting up a new water polo club in town, the Karratha Water Polo Association has won a bid to host the country and national championships at the Karratha Leisureplex.

Karratha sent two teams to the WA Country Water Polo championships in Busselton held from February 28 to March 2, where it was announced they were successful in their bid.

The national competition will come to Karratha next year, with the country games making their way up in 2016.

KWPA secretary Anouska Angove said WA Country Polo had been keen to send the country games up north, since the games had previously been dominated by associations from down south for a number of years.

"The facilities and equipment offered by the Karratha Leisureplex and the Karratha Water Polo Association … are considered the best in the State," she said.

"These factors were a massive drawcard in our bid."

In the 2014 country competition, KWPA president Justin Angove was named the competition's highest goalscorer for the men's division, and both Justin and Nigel Kroonstuiver were named in the WA men's country State team to play in Woy Woy, New South Wales in June this year.

Alex Dobbin and Kerryann Hoff were named in the squad for the women's WA country State team, which will be coached by Karratha's Gary Vincent.

The KWPA will be calling on all of its current and new members to assist with preparing for both the State and national championships.

It will also ask local businesses, the Shire of Roebourne and major mining companies to assist with sponsorship and promotion of both events.
