Cyclone damage delays release of impounded cars in Pilbara

Frustrated Pilbara drivers have found it difficult to gain access to their impounded vehicles after cyclone Christine put the Pilbara's impound lot, Roebourne Dingo Hire, out of action.

WA Police property management division Inspector John Vivian said they were aware of the circumstances surrounding what he called "unavoidable cyclone-related computer issues" and electricity supply to the tow yard site.

"The reason the yard is not operational is that the vehicles cannot be accessed safely or without causing damage to vehicles due to the soggy ground," he said.

"Access for the public has also been deemed not safe at present with the numerous power lines and debris from the cyclone."

Insp. Vivian said the site was expected to be fully operational by January 14 and vehicles which were due for release from January 1-14 would be released at no additional costs.

"Persons wishing to collect their vehicles are requested to refer to the WA Police website and their information sheets," he said.

"All vehicle releases are actioned by the owner or responsible person by first attending their local police station during normal business hours."
