Fast relief from Pilbara heat
When spectators and competitors at sports matches in Wickham hear what sounds like the Norse god of thunder in the distance, they know they are about to have their thirsts quenched.
Succour comes not from a drinks stand or cumbersome cooler, but from Chilly Bin Man, hurtling across the paddock at speeds of up to 63km/h on his custom-made motorised esky.
Wickham resident Hayden Cowie took on the project last year and is now the proud owner of a four-speed, 232cc motorised esky made for just $160 and a few cartons of Pilbara currency.
"I built it for a bit of fun - I bring it down to events and run drinks out to people, whether it be cricket, rugby, motocross - just local events, really," he said.
"I had been out at the burnouts racing their 50cc bikes and getting left behind, so I thought I'd give them a bit of competition next time at the speedway.
"I've just installed front brakes, so it can do standstills."
Mr Cowie said he had bold plans for 2015, with a tilt at the Bathurst 1000 on the cards.
"If I take it down there, I'll see what they'll let me do. It might take me half a day to get around the track, but it will be interesting," he said. "When I'm on the start line I can open it up and give everyone a drink and while they're all cracking their drinks I can take off and get a bit of a head start."
Mr Cowie said he would not suffer the same fate as a South Australian recently encountered as he had no intentions of doing "anything stupid" that would see him on the wrong side of the law.
