An extensive search operation for a missing canoeist in Dwellingup has come to a tragic end after the body of the 66-year-old was found.

Francis Ernest Nelson — also known as Frank — went missing early Saturday morning in the Nanga Brook area, about 130km south of Perth.

Rangers found the 66-year-old’s canoe and paddle floating near Bob’s Crossing on the Murray River, which flows through the Dwellingup State Forest.

Mr Nelson’s car was also found parked on Murray Valley Road. He had been camping in the Nanga Brook area and was last seen leaving his campsite about 4.30am that morning with his canoe.

A land search was suspended on Tuesday but police continued to search the water.
