A car fire on a major Perth freeway has sparked a bushfire which caused severe delays for weekend commuters.

A white 4WD was reported on fire about 12.41pm on Sunday along Kwinana Freeway heading southbound after the Karnup Road exit.

After the road closed in both directions, the affected area of the Kwinana Freeway completely reopened about 4.50pm.

Police attended the Baldivis scene as 95 firefighting personnel were deployed to contain the blaze as it moved into nearby bushland — prompting a busfire alert.

About 5.50pm the resultant bushfire — which burned through 11.5 hectares — was reported contained and controlled as 50 firefighters remain on the scene, mopping up and patrolling the area.
