New water polo league sparks interest

Peter de KruijffPilbara News

It is a sport known to be high intensity and which requires a great deal of fitness to stay afloat, and it's about to start its inaugural season at the Karratha Leisureplex next month.

Water polo is the hot new sport for people to keep cool this summer, thanks to the newly formed Karratha Water Polo Association

The sport has seen great success from the Australian women's national team at the Olympics in recent years, as well as being more infamously remembered for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics blood in the water match between Hungary and the then USSR.

Karratha Water Polo Association secretary Anouska Angove said water polo was a fantastic way to have fun and get fit at the same time.

"It makes for the perfect summer sport in Karratha because you are kept cool in the water," she said.

"We are based at the Karratha Lesiureplex and train on Tuesdays and Thursday nights from 6pm and most Sundays from 10am. The creche is available through the Leisureplex until 7.30pm."

Two clubs have been set up within the association for the first season, which will commence October 17, as the Pilbara Pirates and the Burrup Barracudas are sure to see a rivalry develop in the early days of the competition.

Both clubs have a mens and women's side, and the association welcomes players with experience, as well as beginners, to join up.

Registration and payment of member fees is done online through SportingPulse, and Angove encouraged interested residents to join Karratha Water Polo's Facebook page and check out their website www.karrathawaterpolo.myclub.org.au .
