Poison drama at remote Pilbara construction site

Police and the Department of Health are investigating after a worker at a remote construction site in the Pilbara bit into a food item later found to contain a dangerous chemical.

Major Crime Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident which took place on Monday.

In a press release sent out by police late this evening, it is alleged the worker had begun to eat a piece of food and noticed a bad taste and some discolouring.

"He immediately advised the food preparation staff who advised police," the statement read.

"Late this afternoon... the results of the analysis of the food item was provided to WA Police, which confirmed the presence of a dangerous chemical.

"Major Crime Squad detectives ... are working with the site managers to ensure staff are aware of the incident and the progress of the investigation."

The police say that at this time it appears to be an isolated incident, with no similar incidents since reported.

"At this point in time it is not known what the intent of the poison was, or if there was a specific target," the statement went on to read.

"While there is no information to suggest there is any more poisoned food items in general circulation, it is timely to remind the public to use caution if there appears to be something not right about any kind of food item. In particular if food tastes or smells off, or appears to have been tampered with, it should not be eaten. If a person feels unwell after eating items of food, medical advice should be sought."
