Wasps dart away for win
The Karratha Roosters have been bought down to earth by a 32-point drubbing at the hands of the Wickham Wasps in front of another big crowd at the Bistro.
The Roosters, who went through last season undefeated and often with very large winning margins, went into the match seriously undermanned because of injury and redundancies.
The home team put on four unanswered tries in the opening 25 minutes, breaking the Roosters' defensive line regularly as they ran some of their opponents ragged.
Coming out of half-time up 28-4, the Wasps stretched their lead beyond 30 points.
A late revival by an exhausted Roosters outfit put some respectability back into the scoreline, capped off with the final try after the buzzer to finish the night at 60-28.
Mikolaj Cherrington, Teleke Kofe, David Oxley, Willie Live, Raymund Piua, Rob Burgess and Cody Felton all crossed the line for the Wasps.
Kofe booted seven from 11 conversions on top of his two tries.
For the Wasps, the night was more important than winning against a side that monstered them last season.
The Wasps and Roosters players and supporters supported the beanies for brain cancer cause, which is close to the heart of the Wickham community, according to Wasps coach Paul Bloom- field.
The Wasps sold cupcakes on the night to help raise money for the brain cancer cause.
"We did it for a past member who is suffering from brain cancer at the moment so we just wanted to show we support him," Bloomfield said.
"The game itself was a good turnaround - we spread the ball a lot wider and didn't drop it as much.
"The Roosters played well, just our blokes played a hell of a lot better than the last round."
Bloomfield said they were expecting a tough match against the Hedland Hawks this weekend, who are yet to play a game this season.
