Severe weather warning issued for South West and Great Southern as extreme fire alert issued for Eucla

A severe weather warning has been issued to residents in the South West and Great Southern, urging people to act now as damaging winds batter the region.

Locations that may be affected include Albany, Augusta, Denmark, Walpole and Windy Harbour.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued the warning at 4.19am, advising a strong cold front is approaching southwestern WA.

“(The cold front) brings a vigorous northwesterly flow ahead of it, with gusty conditions to continue over coastal areas during early Tuesday.

“Gusty showers are expected to continue as the front moves across the South West on Tuesday morning.”

Wind gusts of around 90km/h are possible in the warning area but conditions are expected to ease by late Tuesday afternoon.

A fire weather warning has also been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, with conditions raising the fire danger level in Eucla to extreme.

“Strong west to northwesterly winds and dry conditions ahead of an approaching cold front will lead to elevated fire dangers on Tuesday,” the BOM said.

“Fires will spread quickly and be extremely dangerous in these conditions. Take immediate action if a fire starts. If you and your property are not prepared to the highest level, plan to leave early,” Emergency WA warned.

Residents are being urged to action their bushfire survival plan now and monitor the fire and weather situation through local radio stations, Emergency WA or the BOM website.
