Justin Langer: How this beautiful woman’s smile reminded me of the power of positive people

“You mustn’t walk outside alone, and whenever you leave the hotel, take off your watch and necklace. It is not safe out there.” Standing at a check-in desk this week, after 25 hours of travel, this was the response I received from the concierge when I asked her for a nice place to walk for some fresh air and exercise. Getting to South Africa used to be so easy from Perth. A direct 8.5-hour flight to Johannesburg. Perfect. Nup, not at the moment until the direct route returns in April. So, after stumbling into the hotel after a full day in the air, I was craving some relief before the sun set into the Atlantic Ocean, over the breathtaking Camps Bay in Cape Town. “Don’t go outside alone, it’s not safe.” Welcome to Cape Town I thought as I dragged my sorry backside up to my room for the night. The next morning I sheepishly walked downstairs for breakfast. In direct contrast to the concierge the night before, I was greeted by a chef by the name of Baby Girl. She had an almighty smile, and her energy was inspiring. She and her co-chefs were laughing and chattering with everyone who walked over to ask them for an omelette or their favourite style of eggs. Their smiles made me smile. Their spirits lifted my spirits. As good as their eggs were, their attitude was even better. They made me feel so happy that I am writing about them today. How good does it feel when you walk into your favourite coffee shop in the morning, and you are greeted with a smile and a generous serve of happy hospitality? Not only does the coffee taste better, but you are sure to go back again. If nothing else, this is good business let alone just plain good manners. The same theory applies to all industries. For success, the lesson is to wisely choose the people you employ because they can make such a difference to your business and team. Culture is about behaviour, and behaviour is about people. Choosing people wisely is not only good for your clients but it is equally important for the environment you create within your own walls. Like walking into your favourite café or restaurant, there is nothing like walking into your office every day knowing you trust, respect and like the people you work with. Not only does this make work more fun, but from experience, an energetic, cohesive environment tends to be so much more successful. Within these walls you can concentrate on the tasks at hand and focus on what really matters. Unfortunately, the alternative is in-house politics, bitching, egos, and distraction. One of the questions I share when I am presenting on leadership or culture is: “If I ask what your biggest challenge is at work, what would it be?” Most people in the audience, while pondering the question, get that funny look on their face as they search for an answer. After a long pause, I then ask: “Is it dealing with people?” With this 99 per cent of the audience start smiling and nodding their heads as though they have missed the most obvious answer. People, people, people. The point is, to employ and promote wisely for the best results. This is not always easy in the competitive markets we all find ourselves in today, but it is well worth the effort. The second thing I learned from Baby Girl as I worried about what could be ahead of me if I went for my Cape Town walk, is that we all have anxieties. How we deal with them depends a lot upon who we have around us. Listening to a podcast on the flight this week, Dr Stan Beecham said: “Anxiety is a thought disorder of the future, while depression is a thought disorder of the past. Anxiety is where we fear something undesirable is going to happen in the future.“ The first time I was selected to play cricket for Australia, I was excited and proud, but also petrified. This anxiety not only involved how I was going to play on the big stage but also how I was going to be accepted by my new teammates, some of whom were my heroes. The night I arrived at the team hotel in Adelaide, my deep anxiety was squashed the moment I walked through the doors. There at the bar, enjoying a cold jug of beer Allan Border, David Boon, Merv Hughes, Ian Healy and the rest of the team. They took me in like a little brother and I felt instantly relaxed. The next day when my nerves for the contest were at fever pitch and I was facing my first ball in test cricket, I had David Boon standing at the other end. When that ball rocketed into the back of my helmet, I felt some relief when Boony’s arm wrapped around my shoulder, making sure I was OK. The big brothers were there by my side on and off the field. There was a sense of safety in this feeling. I can imagine a young player walking into the Australian cricket changing room today and being greeted by someone like Mitch Marsh. The man who said, on accepting the Allan Border medal for the game’s best player this year, “I am a bit fat at times, and I love a beer,” would be the perfect doorman for any incumbent to the team’s inner sanctum. Not only is he a good bloke, but he has also walked the tightrope of anxiety through his journey of Australian cricket. I can see him putting his arm around any player, and comforting them by the fact he has seen, and experienced, all the doubts, fears, and insecurities of the past and present. He has found ways through these tough times and is now firing on all cylinders. I know for certain that a lot of his success, and ability to endure, has had to do with his family and the people he has around him in the team. Pat Cummins is his best mate, and he knows he has his back. There is power in this fact alone. This week Mitch is captaining the Australian team here in his hometown of Perth; a place he loves as much as a beer. His comforting spirit will have his men following him through thick and thin. Unrelated, but relatable to this theme, a friend of mine was telling me this week about a similar sense of leadership his daughter just experienced. On her first day at university, a senior lecturer told her and her cohort: “No one here is to feel unsafe. But you will feel uncomfortable because you must get out of your comfort zone to reach your potential.” What a great piece of advice for us all in whatever we pursue. And for any of my friends from South Africa — or for anyone who is thinking about visiting — I ended up having a few walks in that fresh Cape Town air and it was magnificent. A beautiful country with so much to offer, just ask Baby Girl.
