Kate Emery: Voice to Parliament is something I care about but I’m approaching saturation point

Are you sick of talking about the Voice yet? You can admit it. I’m approaching saturation point, which is embarrassing because giving Indigenous Australians a Voice to Parliament is something I care about. But it’s starting to feel like a dinner party that began with lovely chats, cold champagne and optimism about the evening ahead and which has degenerated into spilled drinks, sticky floors and a pudding that burned while the host was trapped by that one guest giving the hard sell on crypto. Only after October 14 will we know if that smell from the kitchen is coming from a guest’s gift of flowers or because crypto guy chucked up in the sink. You know who’s not sick of talking about the Voice? The stranger I met while door-knocking for the Yes campaign this week. (Consider that your warning that, while journalists typically aim for objectivity, on this issue I’ve strayed into advocacy). This guy was so keen on a chat that he welcomed me onto his property. This guy was so keen on a chat he repeatedly tried to stop me from leaving when it was clear we were in “agree to disagree” territory. This guy was so keen on a chat he threatened to follow me around the neighbourhood. As someone who has been known to commando crawl to hide from charity muggers at the front door (not my finest hour and my apologies to those McGrath Foundation representatives who, I suspect, caught a glimpse of my Ugg boot sliding out of view), door-knocking strangers was not on my to-do list for 2023. What coaxed me out of the house was a desire to wake up on October 15 and know I’d had a go at convincing others what I believe: that the Voice may not be a panacea but a vote for No is a vote for the status quo. The experience made me doubt the conventional wisdom that what this referendum needs is more detail about how the Voice would function. A lack of specificity didn’t stop my chatty mate from getting bogged in the weeds about how the Voice will differ from the National Indigenous Australians Agency (if I’d managed to get a word in I might have mentioned that the latter isn’t truly independent, can only advise executive government not Parliament and can be abolished by any government that fancies it). I have no doubt that if we knew, say, who would be eligible to sit on the Voice — a detail to be thrashed out by politicians — he would have had a grand time nit-picking eligibility criteria until my bones crumbled to dust on his driveway. The experience was mostly a positive one: I met more Yes voters than the grim polls suggested was likely, chatted to some undecided voters who probably planned to vote No but were too polite to say it and was pleasantly reassured that at least nobody appeared to think I was there to talk about a reality TV singing show. And if any residents were silently commando crawling to safety as I rang the bell, either because they feared I was there to collect money or because they too felt a bit over talking about it? Well, I can relate.
