Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers to round out domestic list with Scarborough spinner Matthew Spoors

Scarborough spinner Matthew Spoors has been handed Perth Scorchers’ final domestic list spot. Sources have told The West Australian the Scorchers have rounded out their list with the leg-spinning allrounder. Spoors was contracted with Western Australia until 2020 and has since played international cricket for Canada. He was the joint-winner of last year’s Olly Cooley Medal for the best player in Premier Cricket. The Scorchers were left to chase a spinner with their final domestic spot after recruiting three batters — including pre-signing Finn Allen — through the overseas player draft. It comes after wrist-spinner Hamish McKenzie left the club to take up a two-year deal with Melbourne Stars. Spoors will likely serve as back-up to white-ball star Ashton Agar, who is the Scorchers’ first-choice spin option. The club rarely uses two spinners on its home deck at Optus Stadium, but McKenzie played four games last season, all on the east coast. Spoors played practice matches with Western Australia last week ahead of the opening games of the domestic season. Spoors, who spent three seasons in the State squad, hit 46 off 32 in one of the matches. His signing rounds out Perth’s playing list for this season. Adam Voges’ side brought Allen and English pair Keaton Jennings and Matthew Hurst to the club in this month’s draft. Voges told The West Australian after the draft they would not leave a domestic list spot open for international allrounder Cam Green, despite the club keeping tabs on his availability after Australia’s five-match Test series with India.
