Wayne Bennett has confirmed Latrell Mitchell will slot straight back into the fullback role when he returns in a fortnight, despite Jye Gray's stunning start to the year at South Sydney.

Rabbitohs coach Bennett ruled out moving Mitchell to centre, with the NRL star on track to return from injury for their round-five clash against the Sydney Roosters.

Mitchell has been out of action since suffering a hamstring tear during pre-season training in February.

Youngster Gray has impressed in Mitchell's absence, the lightning-quick 21-year-old flaunting his class in the Rabbitohs' opening two wins over the Dolphins and St George Illawarra.

But Gray will have to make way when Mitchell proves his fitness again, with Bennett rubbishing speculation about a positional move for the star No.1.

"Fullback is his (Mitchell) position. It's his number one position," Bennett said on Friday.

"He enjoys being there, and he'll be starting back fullback when he comes back."

Bennett also backed Mitchell to return to the field as fit as ever.

"I just saw a photo of him last year. No, it wasn't a nice photo," Bennett joked.

The veteran coach insisted Gray still had a spot in the Rabbitohs squad.

Asked whether Gray could line up as a utility on the bench, Bennett said: "Absolutely, he could be.

"We'll find something for Jye."

Mikaele Ravalawa is set to make his Rabbitohs debut against the Sharks days after signing with the club for the remainder of the season.

The winger will return to his parent club Dragons in 2026.

Ravalawa will look to consolidate his spot under Bennett as fellow winger Alex Johnston (achilles) aims to break into the top-grade side in round four against Penrith.

"We've taken more than the punt (on Ravalawa)," Bennett said.

"We understand he can play. We know he can play.

"He's a good athlete so want to see how he plays football. That will be more important."

Another selection headache looms for Bennett after the Rabbitohs secured the services of Roosters hooker Brandon Smith.

Smith will join South Sydney next year on a two-year deal but he could link up with Bennett's side this season should the clubs reach a deal.

But the hooker is sidelined until at least June after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament late last year.

Smith's imminent arrival casts a shadow over South Sydney's current No.9 Peter Mamouzelos's playing future.

Mamouzelos, who scored one try out of dummy-half and put Sean Keppie over for an equaliser late against the Dragons, is contracted until the end of 2027.

Bennett played a straight bat when asked if Smith could join the Rabbitohs this season.

"We signed him for next year. That was our priority, so if he doesn't come this year, there's no big deal," Bennett said.

"It's where they'll (Roosters) be at, not where we're at. It's up to them.

"He's contracted to them for this year. We'll just move on and if something changes there, we'll talk about it."
