West Coast Eagles premiership player Adam Hunter has died, aged 43

West Coast premiership star Adam Hunter died in the South West overnight, aged 43.

Police confirmed on Wednesday they attended a home in the suburb of Withers, near Bunbury, at about 12.20am this morning, where he was found unresponsive.

Bunbury detectives have seized an amount of methamphetamine and paraphernalia from the scene and they’re speaking to a number of witnesses.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene and immediately began first aid, but Hunter could not be revived and was declared deceased at the scene.

Hunter will be remembered by Eagles fans for his crucial role in the 2006 premiership, including kicking the match-winning goal after the famous Daniel Chick smother in the last quarter of the grand final.

West Coast acknowledged the tragic news on social media this morning.

“We are devastated by the loss of 2006 premiership Eagle Adam Hunter. Our thoughts are with his family, teammates and friends,” the statement read.

The Eagles also held a minute’s silence at training that included players, coaches, staff and fans. A visual tribute reading “Vale Adam Hunter” was projected on the big screen, while his #39 guernsey was displayed.

The death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said he was “very mindful of the privacy of the family”.

The Bunbury product played 151 games for the Eagles after being selected with pick No.29 in the 1999 draft.

He would play predominantly as a defender for most of his career but was used by then-coach John Worsfold as a swingman and head into attack.

He kicked 29 goals in 2007 but was forced to retire in 2009 because of injuries.

Hunter would return to play for South Bunbury and Swan Districts post-retirement, playing in a reserves premiership for the Tigers in 2022.

It is understood Hunter was at football training with South Bunbury last night.

The death extends a tragic week for the AFL community after Essendon VFL coach Dale Tapping and ex-Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood both died on Tuesday.

Selwood’s twin brother Adam was a premiership teammate with Hunter at West Coast, as was younger brother Scott.
