The West Test player ratings: Who stood tall and who struggled in Australia’s Perth rout at the hands of India

There aren’t too many Aussies who can hold their heads high after a rout from India in Perth. Here’s how we assessed each player. HAVE YOUR SAY IN THE COMMENTS BELOW Josh Hazlewood: 6 Was the hosts’ best with the ball in their day-one rampage, with 4-29, bashing away at a really difficult length and making life hard for Indian batters. It felt on day two like he could do the same, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul left the ball well and got through the fire. Travis Head: 6 Played the counter-punch role once the heat was off in the second innings and continued his glittering record against India. Dismissed on 89 and would have loved a century. Played around a Harshit Rana ball and was clean bowled in the mire of day one. Alex Carey: 5 Let through 22 byes India’s second innings and put down a tough chance, not that his bowlers always made it easy for him. Wasn’t as tidy as he has been in recent times with the gloves, but did do his best batting with the tail in both innings. Mitchell Starc: 4 Found his radar after a wayward start in the first innings to take the early wickets of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal in a fiery spell. Took 1-111 in a real slog of a second-innings in more difficult conditions for bowling. Nathan Lyon: 4 Has a sparkling record in Perth, but was barely required in this Test. Copped some tap in a limp end to the third day where the quicks had put the cues in the rack, but did take the wicket of Rishabh Pant, stumped off a wide. It was one of only three wickets to fall to spin for the match. Mitch Marsh: 4 There are real concerns now around his ability to play out a five-Test summer and contribute as the fifth bowler. Took two wickets in a neat spell with the ball when Australia had their tails up but spent time off the ground and battled to make real contributions in the second innings. Pat Cummins says they don’t budget for a fifth, but it will be a long summer. Made six in the first dig and a powerful 47 on day four. Usman Khawaja: 3 His groan-inducing dismissal on day four must have been the first time he ever felt like he could swing the arms in this match after being out there for both of India’s new-ball wipeouts. Made four, edging behind in the first innings and eight, skying a ball he tried to pull, in the second. Steve Smith: 3 You can be out of runs but not out of runs in this game and Smith gave a hint that maybe that is the case in the second innings, but he would have liked to have gone beyond 17 and lifted some more of the pressure off his shoulders. Australia say Smith has found his hands again and their was evidence of them being there on day four, but a first-baller on Friday wasn’t pretty. Pat Cummins: 3 Will come under fire this week for his tactics in the second innings. Australia filed through a number of strategies, but none of them worked to Yashasvi Jaiswal and it left them tired and hapless by the time Kohli bashed them around later on Sunday. He took two wickets in the first innings and 1-86 in the second. Nathan McSweeney: 2 Copped a harrowing probe of his technique and ability to open the batting by Jasprit Bumrah at the end of day one and again on day three. On both occasions he appeared to be so fixated on the Bumrah balls hooping away from him that he was caught off-guard by the ones that tailed back in. His fielding was a highlight. Marnus Labuschagne: 1 He looks like a man in a wrestle with his own muddled mind while batting and failed twice in Perth. His head would be on the chopping block, but there are few other options to bat in that role. Australia’s tactics around his new medium-pacers were misguided and lame. Virat Kohli treated them with disdain, and rightly so.
